starting over

hello all,

Liger a dachshund /pomeranian mix who just recently had his front left leg amputated due to an accident. This February my dog was being watched by my sister and brother-in-law and they took him for a walk. the snow banks this winter were up to ten feet high and this added to what happened. as they were walking a car came around a sharp bend, and liger was off his leash( i trained him that way) and was running back towards my sister the car didnt see him, and he had no where to go. they car clipped his front left shoulder, causing nerves to pull directly from the spine, causing paralysis of the front left leg. they were leaving the leg on as there was nothing wrong with it, but liger self mutilated, exposing tendon, muscle and tissue of the leg, fearing infection the vet immediately amputated. Since we are new to all of this i just wanted to see if anyone had any tips for me. like recently i think he may have hurt his good leg, should i ice it? call me vet? hes still walking but doesnt want to go to far…. also should i be iccing his leg?…. and is the heating pad good to put on the amputation site? and if so how long?

  1. Hi Liger & family, welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. I’m so sorry to read about your accident! But I can tell that you are one spunky dog who will bounce back from all of this.

First. have your pawrents checked out our e-book library, especially “Loving Life on 3 Legs”? Our books answer all of your questions about life on 3 legs, and this second one is especially great for doggies who lost a leg to accidents as you’ll learn about healthy ways to stay strong for life:

It sounds like you pulled a muscle, you may be trying to do too much. It’s still very early in your recovery and you should be going on very short potty walks only. Don’t over do things, you’ll have plenty of time to go on longer walks when you’re strong again.

I also recommend visiting our Discussion Forums http://tripawds.com/forums/ where you will find TONS Of great people willing to help and offer tips too. Start at “Beyond Cancer”which is a great place for dogs who lost a leg to reasons other than cancer: http://tripawds.com/forums/beyond-cancer/

Hope this helps. I’m so glad you’re here and am looking forward to more of your adventures. Stay strong my friend!

  2. Hi there! So sorry to hear about your accident 🙁 But the good news is you will do just fine on only three legs! He could have pulled a muscle or something in his other legs. I would watch it for a little while, have him rest and only go on short walks to potty and see if it gets better. If you are ever worried call your vet and ask their opinion!

    Good luck!

    Cody and Family
